How to prepare yourself for lip filler? DOs & DON'Ts before & after lip filler procedure.

Updated: Feb 8, 2022

If you fancy a fuller pout or just want to tweak the look of your lips a little bit, then lip filler is the answer. How to prepare yourself before your lip filler appointment? What to do or not do, before and after the lip filler procedure? Here's a little guide for when your are having your lips done.

BEFORE THE LIP FILLER INJECTION

1. One week before your lip filler injection, avoid the following:

  • blood thinning over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen, and Aleve

  • supplements such as vitamin E, Ginkgo biloba, primrose oil, garlic, St. John’s Wort, ginseng.

2. Two days before your lip augmentation procedure avoid:

  • topical products such as Tretinoin (Retin-A), Retinol, Retinoids, Glycolic Acid, or any “anti-aging” products

  • waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or using hair removal cream on the area to be treated

3. Two days before lip fillers procedure, start taking Arnica - this is not required, but it will help to lessen bruising.

4. 24 hours before lip filler injection please do not consume alcohol.

5. Worth remembering:

If you are prone to cold sores, there is a risk that the injection may flare this up again. Please don't forget to mention this during your consultation prior to the lip filler procedure.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding please do not use dermal fillers.

If you are allergic to any ingredients or suffer from neurological disorders please let your aesthetics practitioner know prior to your treatment. Your medical history should be discussed during your pre-treatment consultation.

AFTER THE LIP FILLER INJECTION

1. In the first hour after the procedure:

  • you may apply an ice pack and Arnica topically. You can take Arnica and Bromelain tablets which are natural and can help with bruising and swelling

  • take paracetamol to reduce pain as necessary

  • avoid itching, massaging, or picking around the injection site. This is normal and generally disappears within a few hours to a few days. If these symptoms last more than 3 days, please contact your injector.

2. In the next six to ten hours after the procedure:

  • to help with swelling we recommend an antihistamine during the day, such as Zyrtec or Claritin, and Benadryl at night

  • until the swelling and redness have resolved, avoid intense heat in the treated area(s). This includes sunbathing, tanning, saunas, hot tubs or hot wax

  • if there is a visible bump, you can very gently massage the area. Depending on the areas treated and the product used, you may feel “firmness.” These areas will soften and settle with time (usually 1-2 weeks).

  • Sunscreen and makeup can be applied, as well as a gentle cleanser on the area.

3. How to avoid bruising after lip fillers:

  • avoid drinking alcohol or partaking in strenuous exercise, as it may result in additional bruising

  • take Arnica or Bromelain, eat fresh pineapple, and apply ice to the area.

4. Please contact your injector as soon as possible if you experience the following:

  • fever and/or chills post treatment

  • have discoloured blotches in areas not injected

  • have blanching of injected areas

  • notice the area appears red and/or hot to the touch

  • have severe or increasing pain

  • cold to touch

Bonus info - drink plenty of water! Fillers love water so, by drinking plenty, you giving yourself a chance for better results!
